While the byway is beautiful year-round, autumn is the star of the show. From late October to early November, the mountains burst into color, with brilliant red, orange, and gold foliage covering the landscape. The fall foliage season draws visitors from all over, making it the busiest time to visit. In spring, wildflowers bloom in vibrant hues, while summer offers lush greenery and warm, sunny days ideal for hiking and picnicking.
Outdoor Adventure Along the Byway
In addition to its scenic views, the Talimena Byway offers access to a variety of outdoor activities in the surrounding Ouachita National Forest. Hiking enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, including the Ouachita National Recreation Trail, a 223-mile trail that winds through the forest. For a shorter hike, try the Rich Mountain Fire Tower Trail, which leads to a historic fire tower with panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness.
Queen Wilhelmina State Park, located near the eastern end of the byway, is a favorite stop. Known as the "Castle in the Sky," the park features a historic lodge, scenic trails, and abundant wildlife. It’s an ideal place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the Ouachitas.
History and Culture Along the Way
The Talimena Byway is not only a nature lover's paradise but also rich in history and culture. A highlight is Queen Wilhelmina Lodge, a historic resort originally built in 1898. The lodge has been beautifully restored and offers visitors a chance to stay in a mountain retreat, dine in its restaurant, or explore the surrounding state park.
Another point of interest is the Old Military Road, a historic route that once connected Arkansas and Oklahoma for early settlers and military personnel. While driving along the byway, you can visit portions of this road and imagine the rugged journeys of the past.
If you visit in the fall, make a stop in Talihina, Oklahoma, for the Talihina Fall Foliage Festival, where you can enjoy local crafts, food, and live music amidst the stunning fall colors.

The Talimena National Scenic Byway can be driven in two to three hours, but with its many scenic stops and hiking trails, you’ll want to set aside a full day to explore. Fall is the most popular season due to the vibrant foliage, so plan your trip in late October or early November for the best views. If you plan to stay overnight, nearby towns like Mena and Talihina offer charming accommodations and dining options.
